Te Roroa Te Kāinga Roa Housing

Te Kāinga Roa is a draft housing strategy that was mandated by the Te Roroa Whatu Ora Trust in August 2021. Thus began the journey to design, develop and implement elements of the strategic housing objectives for Te Roroa.

With the support of Te Puni Kōkiri, Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Te Kahu o Taonui, Te Runanga o Whaingaroa, Habitat for Humanity, Te Matapihi and many other mana-enhancing collaborators –  Te Roroa are well on the path towards co-creating housing solutions, based on the needs of our whānau.

Some of the housing initiatives that have been implemented so far are:

  • Te Roroa Critical Housing Repairs Project (10 x Te Roroa Houses assessed and repaired by the Te Roroa Building Team (TPK)

  • Mana-enhancing Agreement & Mentoring: (Habitat for Humanity)

  • Temporary Accommodation/Emergency Housing (Foundation North, Te Runanga o Whaingaroa)

  • Healthy Homes Assessments: Whānau Housing & Health, Insulation & heating (Mahitahi Hauora)

  • COVID ISO Cabin new builds (Te Kahu o Taonui)

  • Sorted Kāinga Ora Programs (TPK)

  • Preliminary Planning for Feasibility Studies – Papakāinga Development (MHUD)

  • Iwi-wide Papakainga Development Wānanga (Jade Kake, Matakohe Architecture & TKOT)

  • NZQA L2 & L3 Construction Course (Te Houhanga Marae, Te Kawariki, Northtec, MOE, TPK)

  • Housing Needs Assessment & Data Analysis (Te Matapihi/HHRC)

  • Winter Warmer Packs (HFH)

With the support of many, some of these ‘pilot projects’ are fast becoming sustainable models co-created by Te Roroa and our collaborators.  Some of these outlined housing initiatives can start to demonstrate how Te Roroa can provide quantifiable benefits for our people and ultimately improve outcomes for our communities in the housing continuum.
