Te Roroa Exploring the Opportunity of National Kauri Park with Department of Conservation

Te Roroa has agreed to explore the possibility of establishing the first National Kauri Park in Waipoua. The process will go through a number of stages. The first stage, and the one to which Te Roroa has agreed to, is the exploration of the opportunity and possibility. To do this an investigation team has been established by the Department of Conservation that includes members of the Te Roroa Governance group - Te Roroa Whatu Ora Trust and Te Roroa operational staff. It is an exciting opportunity, however Te Roroa has laid down the bottom line in that Te Roroa must central to any such development and must be at the table in any governance structure of any entity that is established through this process. Templates of Iwi Co-Management relationships with other National Parks and estates are currently being explored to identify the best Co-Management approach for Te Roroa. Further updates on this kaupapa will be posted as developments occur.

Opportunity

In regards to this "Kauri Park " and any other ventures Teroroa seem to be heading to, in what way are they helping the people, the beneficiaries of teroroa? Are we creating job opportunities for us or for other people (non Iwi)? I am all for progress and business, but it seems to be the same people getting paid our money and not doing a good enough job. Just because a person does not have the pakeha qualification, does not make them incapable of doing the work! Implement our people into these jobs. Hands on learning is just as good as the pakeha paper if not better! Thats if we are here for all of our people!!!
